Did This New Yorker Illustration Permanently Damage Barack Obama's Campaign?

The campaign of Barack Obama was furious over a New Yorker magazine cover which portrayed Barack and Michelle Obama celebrating with a fist bump in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Osama bin Laden and with an American flag burning in the fireplace.

It has been quite some time since that cover was released, and New Yorker magazine was actually trying to dispel some of the stereotypes about Obama, but the cover took on a life of it's own, and many analysts now feel that the New Yorker cover actually did permanent damage to Obama's campaign.
